Unless there was a whole lot more to THE MASTER than I gathered, it appears that Paul Thomas Anderson, who I greatly admired after the release of his first 2 to 3 films, continues to slowly and subtly decline with each new movie, this newest one exemplifying this fact IMHOO. A great start, a solid foundation, a dream cast… the film really could have gone somewhere. Anywhere would have been better than what it was. But perhaps…. Fill in the blank. Being entirely subjective of course, who’s to say; but besides the intriguing vehicle it provided for the actors the film seemed almost utterly pointless. In yet another tired turn he has by now also done more than an ample job of showing the world how obsessed he is with human sexual perversion and deviance. We get it. No further exploration necessary thank you.
